The last workshop of Young Leaders Program I coincided with the
inaugural workshop of the Young Leadership Program II. A panel of distinguished
national and international resource persons delivered talk on a range of
subjects including Leadership in eye care delivery: the big picture; leadership
in advancing optometry in India; upgrading optometry education & research;
tapping available resources and identifying opportunities; creative thinking,
team dynamics, understanding personal strengths & weaknesses and overcoming
them, decision-making, managing change and problem solving. An online
leadership seminar session was organized in the series of workshops under YLP
II. A range of leadership issues including qualities of a leader, leadership
mastery, style and communication; and relationship management was discussed.
Case studies of leadership in practice, role of effective communication and
leadership in public health, public diplomacy and soft skills were also
discussed in the series. The participants of the Second Young leaders program
were Anitha Arvind, G Ravi Kumar, Kamal Pant, Khem Raj Nackwal, Mannava Sunny,
Sheethal Pai, Seema Banerjee, Vijayanadh Reddy and Revanth Kumar.
As part of YLP, the participants
successfully undertook two projects to advance Optometry and eye care in India.
Public Awareness Campaign: YLP team
I organized a series of activities including street-theatre, walks,
vision screening camps, workshops and pamphlet distribution to create awareness
about eye care and the important role Optometrists play in eye care delivery.
Sheethal Pai from Nethradhama School of Optometry organized activities in
Bangalore and village in Kanakpura;
Seema Baneerjee from L.V. Prasad Eye Institute at Nidadavolu (West
Godavari District); Kamal Pant from UP RIMS & R Saifai at Saifai, Etawah
(UP); and Revanth Kumar from IVI at Chennai.
Busting myths about Contact Lens: YLP
team II conducted sessions to educate students from Amity University in Gurgaon
about the ease of using contact lens by busting common myths around them.
Khemraj Nackwal from Bausch+ Lomb, Anitha Arvind from Ratan Jyoti
Netralaya-Indore and Vijayanadh Reddy from ESIC-Bangalore also conducted a
pre-session to assess the apprehensions and knowledge of spectacle wearers
about contact lens usage.
The group also actively participated in
the IVI Walk in the Dark held on Sunday, 12 April to create awareness about
eradicating ‘preventable’ blindness.
