Australian Consul General for South India launches India Vision Institute’s National Optometry Awareness Campaign
India Vision Institute’s (IVI) year-long “National Optometry Awareness Campaign” was launched by Mr Sean Kelly, Australian Consul General for South India, with the release of a short video featuring Ollie the Optometrist. The Chairman of the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Dr G N Rao was also present at the launch at IVI Hyderabad on 5 February 2014.
A range of activities are planned during 2014 to raise awareness about eyecare and the important role played by optometrists in eyecare delivery.
“In addition to creating awareness among the general public about the profession of Optometry, the campaign will also introduce Optometry as a rewarding career option for students about to finish school and embark on a career path”, said Mr Vinod Daniel, CEO, India Vision Institute. He added that for want of a sim0ple pair of glasses that may cost just two hundred rupees, crores of rural Indians are unable to work and often live in poverty.
“With India having the largest number of people with ‘avoidable’ blindness, spreading awareness about eyecare and progressing optometry is a priority for India today. A simple pair of glasses can not only change the life situation of an individual but also ensure individual productivity leading in turn to increased national productivity” Mr Sean Kelly, Australian Consul General for South India remarked while launching the campaign.
An online Resource Platform was also launched on IVI’s website (www.indiavisioninstitute.org) on the occasion. “The IVI online resource platform will provide to the optometry community a one stop portal to global resources, Mr Daniel said. As mandated under Aksauhini, IVI’s long-term strategic plan, the online resource will help strengthen optometry education and research, he added.
India Vision Institute, a joint initiative of the Brien Holden Vision Institute, Australia, and the LV Prasad Eye Institute, India, supports research, education and technological development in vision correction, eye disease and blindness prevention.
