IVI Vision Centre in Chennai to expand outreach to underprivileged communities

India Vision Institute’s screening and vision health programs received a shot in the arm today with the official launch of the IVI Vision Centre.

The IVI Vision Centre at Palavakkam was opened by K Pandiarajan, Hon Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, and HE Susan Grace, Australian Consul General in Chennai, along with Mrs Latha Pandiarajan, Co-Founder, Ma Foi group and Managing Trustee, Ma Foi Foundation.

Welcoming the opening of the new facility, Ms Susan Grace said, “We are pleased to have supported IVI in opening the Vision Centre which will assist underprivileged communities to overcome visual impairment.”  The Australian Consulate General has provided support to the Centre’s establishment under its Direct Aid Program.

Twenty-five free spectacles were also distributed to daily wagers and fishermen who attended IVI’s vision screening program held earlier at Palavakkam.

IVI CEO Vinod Daniel thanked the Australian Consulate-General for the funding support to the centre, and the Minister, Mr Pandiarajan, for his presence at the launch.

“We hope to serve communities around the centre and further improve IVI’s outreach and activities. It will be a dedicated vision centre and serve underprivileged people as a walk-in facility to get their eyes tested and receive free glasses. It will also enable people who have been supported in the past to bring any of their glasses for replacement/repair.”

“We are confident the centre will further enable us to serve communities more broadly in Chennai, and particularly the people living in the coastal areas of the city,” Mr Daniel added.

To date, IVI has screened 11,099 adults and 67,577 children in Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, 9,622 adults and 59,185 children have been screened. Nationally, 44,368 adults and 74,837children have been screened. Free spectacles were provided to all those in need.
